The first real masterpiece by Kanno, EVE is a very nice thriller you get to experience with two different POVs. It has everything you should expect: great plot, awesome visuals, and incredible soundtrack courtesy of Ryu Umemoto.
There was an English Windows release in 1999 that featured voice acting, redone visuals and removed the H-scenes. Unfortunately, its script is pretty terrible. It adds a lot of profanity and crude jokes juste for the sake of it, including a incredible number of references to the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal. There also are quite a lot of typos, bizarre phrasing, and questionable localizations (replacing ramen with Hawaiian pizza and still calling it "Japanese cuisine"???). Retranslating a game that huge would have taken years, so I adopted an hybrid approach: the script was ported, than compared to the original in order to remove the liberties taken and correct the errors. The H-scenes had to be done from scratch, and a few scenes that were too broken to be fixed were also fully retranslated.
Thanks to ikun35's great work, we have a new toolset for C's Ware games at our disposal that allowed the porting to be quicker and more effective. Not to mention we managed to dump the whole Windows script, which was way easier to use than the Asenheim version. Even with this rock-solid groundwork, the project took a year and a half. 55 to 60% of the lines have been altered in some way.
I will not do something this huge again. Cleaning after somebody else's crap is one of the most unsatisfying things you can do in the translation department, especially on a game with such a big script. But I'm really proud of the result, and hope new and veteran players alike will enjoy it.
